Well now sports fans, the year has opened with some good training. It hasn't been fast but I have put in 38 miles since the new year. That includes yesterday's 14 miler.

The calves that bothered me all the way through last year are feeling better but not good enough to push hard. I can tell that there will be problems if I try to run anything faster than 10 minute miles. So I will slowly shuffle along and get ready to slowly shuffle through the Tybee Island Half Marathon on the first weekend of Feb. I have no other plans after that, I'm just taking it a couple of months at a time.

Wow, I didn't realize you'd built up that much already. 38 miles in a week is nothing to scoff at.

I had some unexpected travel last week that limited me to just two runs of six miles each. But yesterday I did 8.5 at a 10:00 pace. The great news though is that I only had one small twinge in one of my calves in the first mile and then nothing after that. And I ran miles 2-6 at just under 10:00 pace. So I think they are doing real well. I still won't push them yet though, I'll just let them do what they feel like doing.

Huuummmm, Zen running?

Think of the twinge like a cattle prod. Twisted Evil

really sounds great Micah! I think its best in the long run especially where you are at now - just take it slow and look to the long term keep it up

Pretty good run today. I did 15.7 miles in 3 hours. Ain't fast but it's steady. I did a run to walk ratio of 25/5 for the first hour and then switched to 17/3 for the next two. I had plenty of endurance even up to the end but my quads just kind of petered out the last 20 minutes or so.

It is the longest training run I have done since I turned 40, which was 8 years ago.

3 hours, impressive. I rarely do any one thing longer than that other than sleep!

The whole idea of doing a 3 hour training run is something that you have to get used to. The Daughter and I have talked about it and compared the mental discipline that it takes to do a series of 400 repeats while the lactic acid is burning and the mental discipline that it takes to just go out and keep running for that long, especially alone. Both training sessions take a lot of discipline, just in a different way.

No question that a 3 hour run can get boring and you can come up with all kinds of excuses to cut it short. I had a few today in fact. Wink

You just have to get your mind around that concept of 3 hours of relentless forward motion. Oooh...sounds like Zen again.....

I've done a few 2 hour runs, and I sort of recall being pretty much numb to the movement the last 30+ minutes. By two hours, I was more or less numb to consciousness. Neutral

Haha very Zen Micah - I had the worst time with my two hour run on Saturday - just didn't want to be out there at all course sub-zero wind chills didn't help that at all...

Way to go so far

I don't think I could do it in that kind of cold. I started mine at 45 degrees and it was 60 when I finished.

Yeah well I knew that was going to be my last chance for a bit on one of my favorite routes (its a trail so no chance it will be clear for some time now) so I just went for it...

I usually have trouble keeping it together for anything longer than 90 minutes of steady running. Last summer I tried to make one double digit mileage run a week, anywhere from 11 to 13 miles.
