I agree with conway, their needs to be a purge of many records from the lists, particularly all from the GDR, and retrospectively all records set within two years of a positive drug test, but in the same breath, some will always be on the lists, such as flo-jos time (Yes i know she was never tested positive , but a huge cloud of doubt hangs over those times), so it is always going to be somewhat tarnished.

This also goes for championship titles. Taking kenderis as the most recent example, he will always be 2000 olympic champion in the history books, but only his contemporaries and the sports historian or enthusiast will judge it with some reservation. In short, the cheats have created a real stink, but as conway said, the anti-doping officials are on the offensive, so surely something good will come out of it.

As great as record breaking performances are, it is better to have performances that you can trust are genuine.

Ht 1 looks the most competitive, but it seems darren campbell may not be in the lineup citing a hamstring injury.

Interesting that greenes heat follows powells. Will he try to make a point with a fast time ,to get a psycological edge.

The womens rd 1 heats were an eyeopener with the russian nesterenko running the fastest heat in 10.94 with ottey in second in 11.14 ( A far superior performance considering she is old enough to be her mother).
As for the american women, didn,t impress. Both lauryn and collander didn,t seem to be holding back. Devers is past her best, but should make the final along with her team-mates, but i doubt they will get into the medals.

At the moment, it seems to be shaping up as a nesterenko, aaron head to head.

As i write this, the qf results are out, which i have not looked at yet, so my analysis might be a tad out of date.

Yes the women's 100m heats threw up some impressive performances this morning. Nesterenko (BLR) looked like she was just coasting the race in the final 5-10m, and she ran 10.94 for a new national record. And that with an relatively slow RT of 0.240. Surely if she pushes herself and has a better RT (around 0.13-0.15) she could be possibly looking for a time of around low to mid 10.8x

Lauryn Williams also looked impressive, running an easy 11.16 into a headwind of -0.7m/s, also with a poor RT (0.247 for her, I believe), so she could be looking at a performance of around low to mid 10.9x

Arron also looked impressive only 'turning it on' at around 50-60m, and then running extremly easy through the final stages of the race, to dead-heat in 11.14.

A good morning of running, I'm now looking forward to the quarter-finals.

The first two rounds of the women's 100 have been very interesting ... Colander does not look good at all ... Very sluggish and no explosion ... Same for Devers ...

Looks like the medalists will be Arron, Nesterenko and Williams ... And not necessarily in that order ... My head says Arron should win it, but my gut says the Russian has something special inside ... Gonna be a high 10.8 race ...

The Men's heats threw up some impressive performances. The main favourites, Greene, Powell, Crawford, Gatlin and Collins looked easy running around mid 10.0x to high 10.1x, all of them shutting their races down somewhat far away from the finish.

Ato Boldon, unfortunately, is out of the quarter-finals after a somewhat poor heat. I feel for the guy, because he once was a great competitor and was always there in the major finals (apart from '99, where he injured his hammy around mid-season) and him and Greene really did set off the 'sub-9.90' trend bewteen absolute elite athletes. I just feel for the guy, as the last 2 or 3 season's have been tough for him. Oh well...

By the way, is it okay to post results here on the forums, or does it spoil the fun for you US guys/gals?

Hey I was up til after 2am watching on TV here and monitoring the 100s on the net ... Nothing you could post would surprise me !!! Won't get to actually see the races til sometime this morning (hopefully) and by then the QFs will have been run !!!

Based on the first round I still think it is the 3 Americans and Powell running for the three medals ...

Those quarters were hot!!!
Qf1. F.Obik 9.93...looked easy thru the final stages
Qf2. S.Crawford 9.89...had a so-so start, motored away, but ran all out thru the finish...
Qf3. J.Gatlin 9.96...just like Crawford, run pretty much all out thru the finish...
Qf4. A.Zakari 10.02...looked like a tight finish, needed to 'run some' in order to finish in first
Qf5. Greene 9.93 (Powell 9.99)...Greene looked easy shutting it off at around 70-75m, and looked easy whilst Powell was trying to act flash easing up and dropping his arms at around 60-65m...I hoping that Greene runs something stupid-fast tomorrow, that would shut Powell up

In the women's semis Christine Arron, who was playing catch-up after a dreadful start, was knocked out and will not be in the final...Now it feels more like the olympics...

I'm still sticking to a powell and crawford 1-2, with greene or obikwelu in third.

Time around 9.82/9.83, but they might run something silly like 9.78.

Nesterenko was consistent through the rounds and did well to overhaul the fast starting williams.

All 3 jamaicans in the final, look like potential gold-medalists in the sprint relay, anyhow they will give the americans a run for their money.

Theirs been a real reemergence of jamaican sprint talent not seen since 1988 and 1992 since ottey, jackson, cuthbert and ray stewart.

It's true that the likes of Christie, Bailey and some other candian and british runners are of jamaican decent, I cannot think of any except ottey who switched nationality.

Of course, Inger miller is daughter of jamaican Lennox miller and I also believe that MJ has a jamaican parent.
