That Grand Slam is a year's worth of running. Surprised

Four straight 2nd place finishes should make Emma the favorite. I would certainly like to see her finally win it.

Double, do you know anything about Ragan Petrie? She was the overall winner at last years Kettle Moraine 100K and she is entered at WS too. Would her performance there predict anything for WS? The trouble with that of course is trying to compare two different trail courses.

Ragan is no doubt a very strong runner. Prior to moving to Georgia, she was in Wisconsin and in fact was at Ice Age this year. Historically, East coast runners don't seem to finish at the same level in ultras at WS100. Most are flat landers and can't get to the same type of hills, or experience any real heat prior to WS100.

I don't know how Ragan is training now, but in Georgia she would have access to decent size hills and it does get warm down there. These might aid her overall performance. I wouldn't be surprised to see her in the top 10. I'm not sure if she has run there before, so if she has that will no doubt help her performance as well.

I have to skip the Kettle Moraine 100 this year. It is possible I may be moving and it would be to difficult to do both.

Aloha!

Western States is tomorrow Exclamation Exclamation

I will post the first update around 9:00 am eastern time. All that will be is a report on any surprises in the start list. There is no reason to pick anyone as a favorite except Scott Jurek and Emma Davies. But....don't be surprised if Dave Mackey or Nikki Kimball have great performances. Neither have done WS before but they are solid ultrarunners with more leg speed than most.

No progress reports have been posted and the start list doesn't have any surprises. We knew Ann Trason wasn't running this year. The only others of note who were entered but did not start were Chad Rickfels, a former Leadville 100 winner and Suzi Leon who was the 4th seeded female.

Got to get to the yard work now so I will check back in a few hours.

The latest update is from Michigan Bluff at the 47.8 mile mark. Dave Mackey has a 30 minute lead on Scott Jurek and Nikki Kimball is an hour ahead of Luanne Park and Emma Davies. But there is still a long way to go.

Jurek has a 19 minute lead over Mackey at the Rucky Chucky river crossing at mile 78. Hal Koerner and Joe Kulak are in a pack of 6 running for 3rd place. Tim Twietmeyer is slowly but surely moving up the ranks and has broken into the top 15.

At Forest Hill School Kimball is still holding a 4 minute lead over Park with Davies about 30 minutes back.

Jurek wins his 6th Western States in a row!!!!

He opened his lead starting at about the 80 mile mark and finished almost an hour ahead of Mackey. His finishing time of 15:36 may be a new record, it is still listed as unofficial on the website. If so that means he is running this race faster every year he runs it!

The women's race had been close but Kimball also started opening her lead at the Rucky Chuck river crossing (mile 7Cool and won by about an hour. She finished 10th overall in a time of 18:43 which is competitive with Trason's recent times. Park finished second and Davies dropped at Rucky Chuck.

There was no changing of the guard in the men's race this year but considering Trason's age we may have seen Kimball step to the front as the top female ultrarunner in the US right now. I would love to see them go head to head.
