People run track because it's fast. Indoor track is not as fast, and therefore less popular. Maybe if the tracks were bigger that would change, but for the distance races, outdoor with good weather will probably always be the fastest.

I'm planning to run my first indoor meet in Seattle this January, maybe I'll be able to bring some new insight then Smile

Given that both had 400 meter tracks, why would outdoors be automatically faster than "indoor" ... An indoor track would be contained in a domed type facility ... Both 400 meters around ... Indoors would have "perfect" conditions .... I am curious as to why you think outdoors would be so much faster for distance events ???

Indoors has less air (compressed air) than outdoor tracks, so performance would suffer in that area, due to the fact that the warm-up and warm down for athletes' would be less valuable, and recovery time between events (heat, quarter-final, semi-final, etc.) would also be less valuable to the athletes.

But then again, performances in July-August (on average this is usually where athletes peak) are much different to performances in January or February-March) because of when and where athletes are conditioned to peak within the Track & Field season.

Can't say I follow the compressed air theory... Neutral

__Just a crazy conspiracy scheme: would not that be nice if the organizer of an indoor meet on a 400 m track would control the air-conditioning system in such a way that a 2.0 m/s would aid athletes all the time. Wink

Do you mean less oxygen or thiner air like at a high altitude?

Doesn't seem to make any difference to football players ... Why do you think it would affect the track athletes ???

Plus, oxygen levels can presumably be controlled in a dome. If there's too little, something can surely be done about it.

True Dan, but many of the Indoor arenas I have been to, you have to catch your breath. That's probably just bad experiences, which does not apply to all.
Indoor Track & Field should be no different to Outdoors, apart from the events.
Taking away the 200m from the WICH has just complicated matters...

Whoa. Surprised What sort of building is it in?

Dan

I'm not positive, but I think it's around the inside, or outside of a speed-skating track.
