I'm beginning to wonder if I may be overdoing things . Just received an email from a runner who gets my newsletter, and he tells me that he and his wife are going to Mazatlan, Mexico, to run the marathon, Dec. 1st.

On the spur of the moment, I decided to run it as well - just ran San Antonio Nov. 10th, and will run Monterrey, Mexico, Dec. 15th.

The Mazatlan Marathon is the big one for Mexico, sort of like NY or Boston for the US. It's supposed to be great fun .

Mad Dog, If you run it will you run it hard or use it as a training run? Looks like you got two scheduled too close to run both hard. Good luck and reprt back with all the gory details.

BTW, how did you do at San Antonio? Make it as detailed as you like.

Hard, Shmard - I run'um all the same . At the end, I'm pretty much ready to stop.

The three seminars at San Antonio went great, and the people were really enthusiastic. I had some sub 2:30 and sub 2:25 (and one 2:22) marathoners attend, but most were first-timers.

I think I saved the new-timers a good deal of grief from: bloody nipples (ban-aids, natch), pit-stops (run on empty), the wall (negative pacing), heat problems (drink water, and pour what remains over your head), etc.

During the race, I began near the front, then allowed myself to drift back so I could offer encouragement to the runners who had attended the seminars.

I didn't actually recognize them, but they spotted me as I came into sight. We'd run together for a bit, then I'd drift back to another group.

After I finished, I had a couple of Cokes, then ran back down the course and escorted some of the others, who were struggling, back in.

What was really fun was, I wore the t-shirt from the Sept. 22nd Leon, Mexico marathon, and a number of people recognized me from that race, and the Master's Seminars I'd given. It was a real family feeling.

I'm really getting pumped up on this seminar business - it's so much fun working with excited (relative) new-comers. If any of you have a local marathon that needs a speaker, send them my way.

It's not completely set yet, but there's a possibility I'll be giving a seminar at the Houston marathon (I've done so in the past), and I've been asked to give seminars at the Florida Gulf Beaches Marathon in February. Dr.(Mad Dog Mike) Schreiber, www.training2run.com

A 26.2 mile training run should be no problem for you 3 weeks after a marathon...

The Gran Maraton Pacifico is now history.

The race started under relatively comfortable conditions, but it soon heated up.

By about two hours into the marathon, it got so hot and humid,
runners began dropping like flies, and were being scooped up,
right and left, by the ambulance teams.

Fortunately there were tons of aid stations, supplied with ice cold
packets of both Poweraid and water. Geeze that cold Poweraid tasted
great, but the experience would have been a lot more positive had
the race begun at 5:30AM rather than 6:30.

The Mazatlan beach is truly magnificent, and this event would make
for a wonderful long weekend running holiday. However, I
would advise signing up for the 1/2 marathon rather than the
full version. That way you'd finished before the brutal

Give me another year and I may be ready to run in Mexico. I figure that if they have not detained or expelled you yet, they may just ignore me

I need to find somewhere warm to run anyway as I have 6" of snow right now and I just found my running snow shoes Burrrrrrrrrr

Dear Dan: A friend ran this same race two years ago, and it had been held in December. He told me to run it.

I walked into his store Tuesday, wearing the marathon t-shirt. He took one look at me, and said "warm, wasn't it," and laughed his brains out. He has no intention of running it again.

However, it isn't uncomfortable if you aren't running, and are hanging out on the beautiful beach drinking Corona.

Also, as I mentioned, there are cool breezes in the morning, and the 1/2 marathon would be quite comfortable...and what a great winter vacation for the family!

Dear Video Ranger: When the heck are you going to get a Yahoo or Hotmail account - you missed the last newsletter.

As for getting deported, I've been living here, off and on, since 1961, without trouble of any kind. Of course, even though I may look like a freeek, I don't "do" illegal things.

More neat-o news. I met a commentator from the San Francisco Examinar at the Mazatan Press Conference , and he plans to bring a film team to San Miguel de Allende (where I live) to shoot an interview, and watch us run the trails.

Also, the Rock and Roll Marathon (San Diego, June 1st), has contacted me about the possibility of giving seminars at their expo....and I have been invited back to the San Antonio marathon to give seminars again next year. Onward and upward. Dr.(Mad Dog Mike) Schreiber, www.training2run.com

How about giving a seminar(s) at the 2003 Rock and Roll 1/2 Marathon in VA Beach? (PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE) It is a super event, and the music is great! I plan to get a hotel room on the beach with a balcony overlooking the show stage, that way I can kick back and have my (Mad Dog) carb drink (yummm) and listen to the music. The race ends right in front of the hotel, and the town goes all out to make you feel at home! Having a Mad Dog seminar would make it the ultimate experience

I wonder if Dan could make it? We could set up a Run Down Forum table at the expo, and all join up for a great dinner and a brew before the evening show on the beach. There are great hotels and some of the best food Your bib number gets you into the shows, and they move you around in huge busses that are more like limos...Oooooo so nice And last but not least, where else are there 3 Hooters restaurants in one town :question: ummm they have great buffalo wings
