Yesterday, I went for my first group run with a new bunch of folks. They were prepping for a marathon a couple weeks from now and were running VERY slowly for 13-18 miles (depending which person I talked to.)

I ran 9... half at "their" pace, half at mine; I haven't done more than 8 miles in awhile and didn't want to push too fast, too soon.

Question... how does running so slowly help a person for a marathon? They were running about an 8-minute pace. Little baby steps for me--I could barely run that slowly. I know the young guys I was running with were capable of faster, just not sure why the very slow run helps.

They stressed time running. I can see that to a point, but it seems to me that training a little faster for the distance you want would be better.

Hope someone can help me understand...

Mike

8:00 pace is a great average for a large chunk of marathoners.

With such a long event, the key is to train your body to handle the latter stages, and the only way to do that is to keep the pace in check long enough to get close to that point in training.

It just takes SO LONG... Heheheh. If I have some time next weekend, maybe I'll stick with these folks a little longer.
