Very interesting data ... I went through it a litle last night and am going to really go through it this weekend ... Data on major 100 meter races, some 200 meter races, and sprint relay splits ... And data on both men and women ... I wish I could substantiate the data ... Fastest 10 meter segments are .83's by Greene and Montgomery in various different races .. Shows a couple og sub 10.20 first 100's in a couple of 200 races other than the 96 Olympic final ... And there is a sub 10.00 relay leadoff for Jon Drummond !!!! Justin where are you ??? would you like a copy ??? Interesting data ...

Just for clarity, the 10m splits X-King lists are official but most of the 4x1 splits, 200m halway splits and some of the others are derived from videotape analysis.

This is very interesting and diligent work, but it is important to distinguish official auto-times from a type of analysis which, even when done with scrupulous care has a wide margin for error (especially compared to official times, which are always recorded to thousandths of a second)

Great work though X-King. I was especially intrigued by the splits for Mo before he broke down in the 2001 WC - he hit 50m in 5.50 and 60m in 6.33, much the fastest ever recorded. He would have pulverised the WR - I estimate he was heading for at least 9.72 or 9.73, perhaps faster. But can he ever get there again, or was he unlucky enough to get injured just as he was in the process of running the race of a lifetime?

Welcome back, Justin! You've been rather silent lately...

All official times get recorded to the thousandth? Where are such records kept? Having done quite a bit of auto-timing myself, I'm rather surprised by that. It would be rather annoying from the timing crew's standpoint to have to record to thousandths but quickly spit out times to hundredths for TV/announcing/results (unless their timing systems do both at the same time).

Here's a possibly interesting question for you, Conway, or X-King: If you took the fastest 10m increments ever recorded for each segment and assembled them into the "perfect race," what would the time be?

I personally think that only until someone(a Man or Women) beats those times in thier sex category that then, and only then they shall be know as 'The Perfect Sprinter'.

Very interesting, thanks. Notice how the all-time best splits as a collective lot perfectly follow the typical race pattern? The thing that stands out to me is how even the cutdowns are between splits, even though they're from different races/athletes. Also interesting that it hints at the best women's races having held top speed slightly longer than the top men's.

I'm most surprised by Marion having the best recorded first 10m, seeing as how that's typically her glaring weakness.

What is interesting is that the current women's WR is near that perfect race !!!! And that if Mo would put all of his best segments togehter he obliterates the men's WR ... Which says that MO "should" be able to come back with a WR that is clear of the 9.70 level without having to run his perfect race !!!
