Running my first marathon in about a month and on the long runs (up to 32km)during training I'm experiencing a great deal of trouble past the 27-28km mark. Heart rate and breathing are well under control but my legs have just got nothing in them. A bit worried where I'm gonna find the last 12km from! Any thoughts appreciated.

Are you taking in any sports drinks or gels during your run? (gatorade, all sport, powergel, gu, ect) Because it sounds like your running out of muscular carbohydrates and your body is having to switch to other metabolic fuel sorces that aren't as efficent. Also what kind of foods have you been eating prior to your runs and when?

Hmm I think there's the answer then - I'm pretty new to this game - For the long runs on sundays I'd get up at 6:30, take in a sachet of gel and start running at 7am. Then just water every half hour. What do people use to carry the gel sachets around during the run? I'm guessing it would probably do me good to get up at least a half hour earlier and at least take in some sort of breakfast?

Are you carrying water with you? If so, you could get one of those water bottle holder fanny packs that would also provide pockets for keys, gels, and mountain money. I've always thought those would be annoying to run with (I've run to work with a very light fanny pack for keys, glasses, and ID), but then again, I've never trained at distances that required carrying nourishment with me...

Also, some cycling and running apparel includes pockets for such things. Many of BOA's offerings have that.

I will make this suggestion at the risk of having some of our other regulars hurl invective and brickbats in my direction.

If this is your first marathon and your goal is just to finish and feel good doing so, then do some pre-planned walking. It doesn't have to be much. Just a couple minutes of walking every 15 minutes or so will help postpone that trashed out feeling.

OK regulars...I got the hard hat on.
