Have you tried stopping *before* your quads start burning (if it's at about the same point every time, you should be able to anticipate it) and stretch them out, then continue on? I have had several problems that required doing that for a while until I could break through that point and build back up.

To tell the truth, I like the feeling.

Thirty seconds of stretching doesn't sound nearly enough. I like to stretch (while still in bed) for several minutes. I jog over to the track, to warm up, then stretch again before I begin a track workout.

To help prevent "quad burning" during the first mile of a two miler, I suggest you jog a few miles first to warm-up, then stretch. When you continue with the two miler, I suggest you start out a little slower, and speed-up thoughout the run. Mad Dog Mike www.training2run.com
