Oh yeah, there's a bunch of articles on barefoot running. Some people take it to the extreme, some say that it actually strengthens the foot muscles more although I'm not quite sure about that to make an opinion. I've also done a cooldown barefooted before in the mud when it was raining. Feels good mentally and physically to me...

If you think about it logically - of course it does. how else can you get that sort of a workout on your feet? the torsional stresses that it puts especially on uneven terrain are un matched in my opinion. seems fairly straightforward just as running even with shoes on over uneven terrain enhances the stability muscles so does barefoot running adds the additional factor of the feet muscles tendons and such.

I'm always nervous about an athlete stepping on something in the grass... A national caliber ex-teammate of mine had a very bad accident along those lines.

Yeah you can get typhus if something gets in your skin. I almost stepped on a snake once but I had shoes on. There are risks, but you can find a safe field of grass. Almost every elite athlete has ran barefoot before. Even people in Africa, besides runners, there are tribes where everyone is barefoot.
