I had my doubts too. I had at first looked at the ingredients and thought "this stuff is only an iota different." But I had a "free" coupon so I thought I'd give it a shot

Wow, that was an unexpectedly detailed study. Shocked

Personally, I always had major troubles with sports drinks anywhere near exercise time, let alone during. I've tried the gels a few times and had no problems. I don't run long enough for energy intake to be an issue, but my conclusion was that gels are much better for sensitive digestive systems. Perhaps they're slower abosorbing (thus less aggravating), which resulted in the lessened effectiveness in the study?

When I read Noakes, MD, Lore of Running, I found out that unless you run 20 K or a longer distance, such drinks as Gatorade are "too thick." For any distance up to 10 K, you would have to dilute them in half--and--half proportion with pure water. It reminds me of the NYC marathon runners from the 1970's and 1980's who used to use diluted in the same proportion coca cola that was defizzed.

Dilution is also a good way to extend an expensive product. Gatorade Endurance usually runs about two bucks a bottle ( 34 oz ). I pour mine in a glass over ice which adds about 40% to it.

That was mostly for the caffeine, not necessarily the sugars. The dilution was to keep from over-doing it, as the caffeine can dehydrate you.

My best 1.5 mile run was done about 90 minutes after consuming a Red Bull (to stay awake for a staff meeting!)

I might stick with that plan for future fast runs...

Sounds like the original Gatorade is too strong, and the endurance formula is stronger still...

I like the stuff, but can't comment on what it has done for me. I've been doing the Accelerade/Endurox R4 thing for awhile and like it.
