Wow, that's real fast, real early. I hope he has better luck than others before him at maintaining that sort of early season form. Powell didn't fare too well last year...

Someone's gonna have a good year. Earlier he said he wasn't gonna do too well; I hope that doesn't mean he's gonna be peaking too early or something. But hey, if you have the record, that's plenty fast anyways...

I already have written in these fora that Justin Gatlin will dominate; however, Olusoji A. Fasuba, and not his Nemesis, Asafa Powell, seems to be his main competitor so far. I would love to see a three—way duel between Gatlin, Powell, and Fasuba – my ‘bet’ would be on the Nigerian because while Powell and Gatlin would keep “eyes” on each other, Fasuba would win unnoticed by the duelers.

Awesome stuff from Gatlin - but I don't see him getting any quicker this year. Mind you I never thought he would win Olympics '04 or break the WR of 9.77 so that shows how much I know! LoL

Two versions of Gat's WR can be found at the following site:
http://folk.uio.no/perel/

The rest of the season should be awesome - Powell is running tonight so look for a fast time from him - wonder how he'll respond to Gat's WR?!?

Churandy Martin also ran 9.76, but he was aided by altitude and +6.1 following wind! 9.76 is still fast though, no matter what the wind is. That is only 2nd to Obadele Thompson's 9.69w (1995) with +5.7m/s as one of the fastest 100m under any conditions - Martin's 9.76w equates to around
10.06/10.07 with still +0.0 wind and his PR is 10.04 I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) so he could threaten Boldon's NCAA record 9.92 at the NCAA Champs in June

I still don't know where that wind reading came from on Obadele's "record" run... All the reports at the time said there was no wind reading, but one magically appeared several years later.

I didn't notice it initially, but the wind for Gatlin's WR run was the max allowable +2.0 mph, identical to that of Montgomery's 9.78.

Hmm, T&FN has the wind listed as +1.7 mph...

Gatlin's time corrected to 9.77
The official time was 9.766, I guess. Now the question is: can he do it agian?

Wow. What idiot was put in charge of reading the photo? You should never even be seeing the thousandths in the software unless you need to zoom in to break a tie.

Sure, but how do you let a mistake like that slip through the cracks? It's not some podunk meet with inconsequential hand times...

They guys who measure the times are only human or error prone; however, the wind aided times tell us nothing about the sprinter's ability (best example Marcin Jedrusinski ran under 10.10 s 100 m and under 20.20 200 m wind aided).

Where have I been ??? The wind was always 1.7 ... Apparently the annoucner kept saying that the wind had to be 2.0 for it to be legal, so it was reported that the wind was 2.0 ... If you had the chance to watch a video of the race it always read 1.7 ...

As for the rounding error, that is not uncommon for something like that to happen ... Everyone is always SO in a hurry to get results out ... I think the problem with the whole thing is the "urgency" that people have now with results ... I remember when a 20 minute wait was normal ... Making the crowd wait just a couple of minutes to make sure that everything is in order should be status quo ... But everyone wants to know as soon as the athletes cross the line ...

As a result of this read, there are a lot of people crying foul, when the only problem here is that it occured on a WR race ... If there were no record there would be no issue/controversy ... This stuff happens all the time ... Even at Olympics and Worlds you will see times adjusted between rounds/races ... But note that there is always a momentary lull in a final before the "official" time is announced ...

But, but... You should never be viewing the thousandths unless you're specifically zooming in for that level of precision, such as to break a tie. The software does the rounding for you, so human error shouldn't even enter the equation unless you're dumb enough to intentionally introduce it.
