I'm relatively new to running and am always wondering what keeps people going...the moments that make all the hard work worthwhile. Any words of advice for someone like me?

Also, in the interest of sharing, thought I'd pass along a clip I saw on another site that I think is actually from a NB ad but that I like a lot for how it talks about running. Think it gets it right?

It's all about inner motivation and the desire to make yourself better every day, every practice, every race. Knowing that if you can do that, you can do anything you set your mind to.

I have always liked running, and if you consider my job -- I have no choice, but to run.
What does motivate me?
Self-improvement.

This brings me to ask -- how did you start running?

In my case, it was my sister (six years older than me). She was angry that she had to take care of me. To make herself entertained, she organized 30--meter or so dashes and 300--meter middle distance races amongst 3 to 5 year olds in our neighborhood back in my native city of Bialystok in Poland.

Nice thoughts about running Smile I identify with pushing yourself then trying to push yourself further...that's one of the things I thought that the video got right. Really, running is such an individual feat that you have to be in it for yourself on some level!

For me, its about preparing the mind and body to dominate a race that's 2 minutes of pure hell.

I run with friends too, which is fun.

Sometimes nature itself is all it takes for me to get out there and run. Other times, the beauty just strikes me and memory lasts within me. The memory can sometimes get me out on the road running no matter what the time of day or weather.

Dancing, good thread....I like Fry's response a lot, mine is similar. I prepare my mind and body to run ultra's. Great Philosophers have said that human limitations are far, far beyond where we think they are.

Wow...just reading people's responses is pretty motivating! Between the NB clip and the way that all of you talk about running, it makes me want to get out there and do it right now Smile (too bad it is raining!)

I'm sometimes motivated by the fact that I am far healthier because I run. I have loads of energy and am incredibly resilient to flus, colds, etc... I guess you could say it complements the other activities I do.

Basically for me, its the enjoyment of going fast (Sprint Runner), i push myself to get better and better to get better times then my previous. Also the challenge when your put up against a fast sprinter and having the motorvasion to go all in to do the best you can be.

What got me going, when i first started running was in year 6 when i loved running but never good at it, but that didnt stop me, it was then when the motorvasion hit me and in year 7 untill year 12 i have been pushing myself to get better and you can say win. But i always loved to win, in anything but it dont bother me if i dont. Just keeps me going if i dont.

But Eddd, I'd melt! Laughing

TeeJay, you sound a lot like the video guy....I think that's the feel behind NB's whole campaign. It's about motivating yourself to keep pushing yourself...that sort of motivation can't come from anyone but yourself.

Ok, rain or not, I've got to get out there!

Find a good running partner, or join a running group.
