I remember that some persons in these fora did doubt that Team USA in 4 x 400 m will improve the world record outdoors; well, I think that they should think again and think a lot. I stand by my position that the team will improve the outdoor world record by the Olympic Games in 2008; most especially after they just improved the indoor world record in a great manner.
When it comes to my native country of Poland, it is sad, but the Polish women do not matter how well will they perform will not win a gold medal--the Russian team is just too great at present for any other team to beat.
The Polish men, however, are comming back since two years ago -- another young 400 m specialist has ran well and improved his personal best indoors. I believe that they will win the gold medal in the European Championships'2006 this year.
As to the Polish federation and track and field, they will get really good because there is so much competition for the power at the top (within the federation) that there are two, not one, grassroots programs at the youth level running at the same time nation wide. Both sides try to outdo each other in their contribution to the development of the future athletics to use an European term. _________________ http://vincovitanj.tripod.com/Do_not_be_a_victim1/index.htmlhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u43o595CARQ

I'm not so sure about that ... The 4x4 is a very tough record ... Consider how long it took to get back to 2:56.16, from 1968 to 1988 !!! And that to get it to its current state took an assemblage of all time greats ... 2:54.20 is as close to a ceiliing as any existing WR in my opinion !!!
The current record is an average of 43.55 per man !!! Consider that a "great" leadoff would be 44.5, that means that the remaining three individuals average 43.23 !!!
So basically you gotta go 44.5 on the leadoff and then three 43.1's to get the record !!!! Even if you leadoff closer to 44.0, you still have to average better than 43.5 a leg to get the record ... And while I love the current group of quartermilers, I don't see it ... I'll be happy to see 2:54.99 right now ... That would be a great achievement ... Maybe by 2012 we can challenge ... I think we need for Clement and Merritt to mature ... And for one or two more sprinters - like Carter and Spearmon - to run more 4x4's ... I think that they, along with Williamson, Rock and Wariner are the core of our relay team ... And I see many more golds in their future ... But it is going to take a tad more speed and maturity before they can approach the record ... And even then, I only see it dropping fractionally ... _________________ Conway

I agree, it's too tough of a record to see any reason to believe it's about to be broken. Not only do you need 4 guys capable of running close to 43-flat, you need either: a) similarly talented competition, or b) guys that can go even faster under ideal conditions. I don't see either taking place any time soon.
As for using Indoor performances to predict Outdoor records, I think that's a very misleading basis to start from, as so few Indoor and Outdoor records are comparable.

And the fact that the sprint relay record has not been broken for over 13 years now even though it always seemed it could be time and time again underlines how much harder it is to break the 1600 relay record. |

That example isn't particularly relevant, though, because by overachieving, the Polish team has lots of competition to pull them. If a US squad overachieves similarly, they're basically running a time trial and cannot possibly hope to perform their best.

I like the way Spearmon is testing himself, this indoor season, over the longer sprints. I definitely see him in the mix for the 4x4. _________________ Paul

The issue with the US squads is that they are already at the limits of performance ... Guys are already running 43.1/43.2/43.3 type legs ... Not much improvement to be had there ... _________________ Conway

The old squads didn't really have much room for improvement with the regular 43.3/43.4 legs being run by 2 or 3 men, but I think that the squad(s) of today could improve by some 0.3 each leg at least (1.2 overall) which would put the 2:55.91 squad at 2:54.71, but then again there is not much improvement to be made from passing only after improving on the flat, so that 2:54.20 looks to be secure for some years to come (until 2012~) _________________ Doubt whom you will, But never yourself.

Not even sure 2012 will be soon enough ... I think in order for that record to go you'll need at least a coupld of guys running in the mid 43's in the open race on a fairly regular basis ... That might give you the option of having a couple guys go hig 42 in the relay, which would slip you under the current record ... _________________ Conway
