Here are some of my PR stats and the related V02 max value based on time
400 PR: 63.3 VO2 max value 64.558
800 PR: 2:23 VO2 max value 58.254
1600 PR: 5:09 VO2 max value 57.049
3200 PR: 11:21 VO2 max value 55.206
5000 PR: 18:42 VO2 max value 53.871

As you can see, with each PR for a longer distance, My VO2 max value "changes".

I'm going to be doing some more VO2 max tests on myself pretty soon.

I'm beginning to wonder, do I have more potential as a middle distance runner? Or am I just low on motivation for longer races? After all, that 1600 PR happened despite the fact I ran the first 800 in 2:21! And that 3200 PR happened when I ran the first 800 in 2:35 and the first mile in 5:21! Ugh... don't get me started on the longer 5k! I firmly believe my cross season was OFF. Or could be my inner middle distance runner tendancies that make me go faster than I should in the first mile? (typically around 5:40)

I'm first going to do the walk test since I'm still injured a bit. Then I might try Cooper and Balke tests for VO2 max and maybe I'll figure this out.

No conversion or prediction can tell you what you'll do under different levels of effort. All they're good for is giving comparable performances over different distances, which may or may not hold true for a specific athlete.

Since you listed 2:23 as your best 800m, those PR's are clearly not your max efforts, thus not very meaningful for the question asked, i.e. what your best distance is.

In that track season I only did the 800 a few times early in the season around 2:23-2:25. Later, I traded the 2-mile relay and the 800 for the 1600 and the 2 mile. I thought I was more likely to get my varsity letter there, and I was scoring points in some meets in those spots. But, I never did get my mile or 2 mile strategy worked out. So I'm thinking I might just have more potential in the 800.

Running on a grass cross country course is slower than on a track. Who knows how much, but it's definately a little slower.

Max. Oxygen Uptake (lung capacity, basically). It forms a fairly accurate means of projecting performance for endurance events.
