Pam Reed, 2 time Badwater champion, ran 300 miles nonstop this past weekend in Arizona. She ran 6 laps of 25 miles each in 79 hours and 57 minutes. That is an average of 16 minute miles for over 3 days.

Shocked WOW Shocked

It would be interesting to see what her eating and drinking schedule was like. Also what kind of shoes she wore. I can't imagine not having any major foot problems. That kind of duration is just unfathomable.

I would guess she wore several different pairs of shoes, all previously broken in. 300 miles continuous would surely burn through any light weight shoe, and they'd be so drenched with sweat it would be rather unpleasant 2/3 of the time.

Dumb question of the day - why would anyone want to put themselves through something like that ??? What's the motivation ??? I can almost understand the Ultra runners, but this boggles me ...

Dean Karnazes is the first one to actually bring up the idea of running 300 miles nonstop. He is an accomplished ultrarunner with a win at the Badwater 135 mile and several top finishes at Western States. He did a 200 mile run several years ago then got the idea to run 300. His best attempt ended at 267 miles when he kept waking up and finding himself running down the middle of the road. I guess he didn't have handlers.

So Pam Reed decided to give it a try and she became the first to do it. What is interesting is that they both have biographies due out very soon.

So why did they do it? I don't know. Why do people climb Mt Everest, why do they swim the English Channel, why do I do back to the buffett a fourth time?

Karnazes was on Letterman recently, I believe promoting the book.

When ultra distance runners run, they don't run non-stop do they? I mean the world's longest distance event is the 3011 mile run in Jamaica which takes up to 3 months to run at an average of 300 miles a week. By the way the marathon monks run 2 marathons a day everyday.

Most ultrarunners do some walking during a race. It depends on distance, terrain and whether they are a frontrunner or not. In 50K to 50 mile races on roads or easy trails you will see the frontrunners stopping or walking only at the aid stations. Some of these guys...and girls...are running a sub 7:00 pace so there can't be much walking going on.

On trail races a common strategy is to run the downhills and flats and walk the uphills. Tim Tweitmeyer who won 5 Western States 100 races estimated that he ran about 85% of the course.

I saw some guy run the 135 mile race in England on T.V. through a canal, and when he was finished, the whole bottom of his feet were one big blister, and it looked wrinkley Shocked
