Yeah, that about sums it up... I haven't looked up the stats myself, but from what I've read (I don't doubt the sources), that places Webb as the top American of the year, top 15 all time for Americans, breaks the US high school record in the mile and 1500m (split time), and beats the top collegiate miler in the country by 2 seconds. Wow! He'll have Kevin Sullivan to train with next year, so he could really be scary if he keeps up this rate of improvement.

Let's hope that Webb stays healthy and can endure the publicity and high expectations that are bound to come. If he can do that he may be the distance star the US has been needing.

He certainly seems to have his priorities straight. It's anyone's guess how Webb's athletic future will turn out, but he seems as likely as anyone to realize his potential.

His coach-to-be at Michigan made some comments that I had been wondering about myself. As great as the pressure is on Webb, it might even be greater on Warhurst (the coach) who will be analyzed like crazy over the next 4 years. It almost would have been easier for him had Webb come in having narrowly missed the record. Then again, it's a risk/challenge most coaches would be willing to take. Smile

Good point about Warhurst having pressure But he has a bunch of proven athletes right now - Sullivan, McMullen, a couple of steeplers. The guy already has a good reputation.

Look at the Stanford women's coach has done to the top national girl recruits every year. They normally run really well their first year then disappear. Stamps was like Webb and she is off the scene now but no one talks about the coach. With the national class Standord reloaded with again with possibly the top 3 of 5 girls in the nation again this year if they don't do well, it will be really sad.

Stamps' fade seemed to start before she got to Stanford, but I agree with what you're saying. If Stanford didn't have such a strong men's program, I think you'd hear much more about the women's diminishing returns. Being at the top of the men's heap seems to deflect much of the criticism, although the women are still pretty darn good.

Here's a good article on Webb in The Washington Post.
