___It seems to be a good idea. However, I would like to propose a way to save the event:
What about this:
Heats: time based only, three runners per heat; top twelve times advance to the quater-finals; runners get seeded based on their place in the IAAF Ranking: two runners seeded per triple -- let assume that there are 40 partisipants. Therefore, there would be 14 races, 12 x 3 + 2 x 2; thus 28 runners would have to be seeded in two groups of 14 each.
Quater-finals: four winners plus two best times advance to the semifinals
Semifinals: two winners advance to the Grand Final. Three fastest, time based, runners-up advance to the Minor Final
Grand Final: 2 runners
Minor Final: 3 runners

I don't like it. Any event that requires you to limit heats to 3 runners in the name of fairness is a fundamentally flawed event. Fix the event before trying to change the rules to accomodate it...

Since 100 m is missing from the indoor championships, why not run 150 m races that would exclude one of the turns, or 250 m races that would add extra 50 m of the straight?

I'm not in favor of any event that heavily favors a contestant based on the lane draw. As long as you have one turn, the same problem is still there, just to varying degrees. Unless reliable some formula can be found to change the distance by lane, I don't see any point in bothering with it.

What really needs to happen is the development of more indoor 400 tracks ... Then the World Indoors could run a regular set of events ... And the results would actually be relevent heading into the outdoor season ...

Now that's the sort of overhaul I'm hoping for!

That would take quite a venue, however. Conway, do you know of an arena in California that could house a 400m track and have room for, say, 8000 to 10000 spectators?

Good idea, but looks a little unrealistic.
I wonder, what size are the oversized indoor track.

300m is the biggest Indoor track I've heard of, and it supposedly makes the banked turns pretty mild.

However, 400m tracks can obviously be built around the perimeter of a football/soccer field in regular stadiums, and many Indoor meets simply erect the track for their one meet a year inside a coliseum, so I see no reason why the same couldn't be done inside a domed stadium...

Dan, I can see wisdom in your words. There are football and soccer stadia or stadiums that are fully roofed.

There are several indoor 400 meter tracks ... Dan there is one right close to you in Moscow Idaho !!!! There are indoor marks for 100 yards and 100 meters for example set on 400 meter indoor surfaces ... I don't have a list of them but they do exist ... And as Dan alluded to, doesn't take much more than the 200 and 300 meter ovals ...

Expense wise it wouldn't be that difficult I woouldn't think to enclose some facilities that are not getting a tremendous amount of outdoor use currently ... Especially with the prospect of hosting major world class indoor competitions ...

__Dan, I know that you will disagree with me. However, I believe that Urbas is going to get the leftover gold. He already qualified for this year's world indoor championships with 20.96 seconds, Tomorrow, he should win Polish Indoor Championships, in Spala, with 20.86 seconds (Spala's track is slow; this 20.86 should be as good as 20.76 in the WIC'04). Soon after, he should 'be injured' (sic). On February 28, he should run 20.69 seconds, but say that his participation is doubtful. In the semis and final, he should come close to his personal best from the European Indoor Championships (he won) 20.55 seconds. This should be enough to win.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by leftover gold...

Not sure what that means either ... Urbas won't win WIC title though ... That should belong to Malcolm as long as he is healthy ... Will have to see what happens in the US championships and who ends up being our representative ... But I have a feeling our best will not be there ... WIC will go in 20.65 this year unless someone steps up in the next week !!!
