For my money there is no more competitive (and therefore entertaining) event from Jr High through world class than the 800. Every time I attended the NM State meet every 800m race was a blast. Because they either came down to the final 50m or you were watching a great preformance (like David Krummenacker my Fr. year).

As much as my distance roots want me to pick a longer event, I just can't deny the 800.

Well of those you have listed I would have to say the 4x4 ... Most exciting race at any meet that has it on the schedule ... Hands down ...

Unfortunately however, many elite meets do not offer the 4x4 ... So my write in candidate is the 200 ... Speed, suspence (with the turn delaying the actual standings of the race), excitement, ability for the standings to change ... My favorite "open" event ...

I had to go with the 800, also. Bit of personal bias, but like DG said, good 800's have an incredible level of prolonged intensity. Similar to a sprint, but with the duration of a distance event. The 4x400 is probably the only event similar in that respect, but I think it loses a bit comparatively by having new faces each time around the track. You don't get quite the same sense of appreciation of how hard each person has to work.

I agree with Dan and DG on the open 800. In dual meet competition, and it all boils down to the last event, its hard to beat the 4 x 400 for excitement.

Guess I'm in the minority when I say the 2mile. It's not competed very often (we're talking pro aren't we?) and offers some really exciting action.

The mile of course because it is purely the most exact middle distance event.

The mile is great as an individual event - but coming down to the last event the 4X400 is also amazing... Nothing beats getting to the end of the meet with two teams close and relying on points from that event (which of course is also a mile (since I used to run it was called the Mile relay)

I would love to see more of 1 K or 1,000 meters.
However, I do agree that 1500 m and 1 mile are the best.
I love 4 x 400 m, but I would love for the computer programmers to create a program that would convert the picture from 4 x 100 m to show it as if it was run on a straight.

Our new head coach is a throws guy, but he said this year that the 800m has become his favorite event to watch, with all the surging and strategy, and how explosive the moves tend to be.

Although I liked the 800 better when I was a runner. The mile is the best event world wide. There is only Three events IMHO that everyone in the world would want to when some day.

Mile
100m
Decathlon

The latter two just because they have the coolest titles
"Fastest man or women in the world"
"Greatest athlete in the world"
