Sorry if it looks degrading. I just wanted to offer some help, so I spelt it PHONE-NET-IC-AL-LY! LOL! _________________ Doubt whom you will, But never yourself.

I see a a4 man racae for 3 medals ... Shingo/Patton/Capel/Buckland ... JJ Johnson is poor on the turn as is Campbell ... And these four aren't going to get run down ... And actually I see Shingo just outside the medals as I think the top three could go sub 20 ... Gonna be a great race ... _________________ Conway

1 6 1383 Capel John USA 20.30 0.161
2 4 1422 Patton Darvis USA 20.31 0.156
3 5 766 Suetsugu Shingo JPN 20.38 0.176
4 2 513 Campbell Darren GBR 20.39 0.151
5 3 960 Buckland Stéphane MRI 20.41 0.129
6 1 1407 Johnson Joshua J. USA 20.47 0.166
7 7 974 Fredericks Frank NAM 20.47 0.158
8 8 1006 Emedolu Uchenna NGR 20.62 0.184
Looks like Conway called it pretty well, with just a couple of people swapping spots. Surprisingly slow race, though. Looks like a good blanket finish, at least.

With the kind of times we've seen in these WC's, does anyone think Michael Johnson's retirement was premature?? |

I think he retired for two main reasons:
1) Injuries (primarily in the 200m).
2) Fear of not measuring up to his own standards.
Once he got the WR in both events, just winning wasn't going to be enough to satisfy him...

Michael got the WR in 99 ... Retired in 01 ... Was over 30 ... Went before his skills began to diminish ... Doubt if he would be runningthose times now ... He got out at the perfect time ... _________________ Conway

Once again I opened my big mouth and endorsed the wrong guy. It seemed easy to endorse buckland, he looked good in the rounds. Nevertheless if he can keep tht form he will be one to keep an eye out for next year.
Shingusetsu or something like that (thanks for the spelling advise). First japanese sprint medal in history, great work!.
As for capel, I agree with conway, he looks like the most exciting sprinter to emerge from the us this year. From his interviews he sounds very focused and mature in his statements and humble about his achievements. A good frame of mind to accompany a great physical ablity. |

I've been very impressed with Capel's physical abilities since what, his Junior year at Florida? He looked ready for a huge breakthrough in 2000, but this is the first year he seems to have put everything together.

Capel was as good in 2000 ...Everyone just remembers that last race is all ... He was right there prior to Sydney ... He'd run 10.03 ... He won the Trials at 19.86 ... And he was cruising through the rounds at Sydney ... But then that fateful final ... And that is all anyone remembers ... _________________ Conway

I guess I should have worded that a bit better. No question in my mind he was in better shape in 2000 -- he was the clear favorite headed to Sydney -- and he's just starting to regain that form after 2 years away. It just didn't seem like he was quite on top of his game mentally, though. That's why I wasn't super surprised by his mishap in the final. This year seems like he's really addressed a lot of inconsistencies in his approach to the sport, and it's paying dividends.
