From yesterday's Weltclasse Zurich recap:

Quote:
The most bizarre win was in the steeplechase by Qatar's Saeed Saif Shaheen, the athlete formerly - and until very recently - known as Stephen Cherono, who won the Commonwealth title for Kenya. Cherono signed for Qatar in a move which resembled a football transfer.

An athlete's switch to another country is often a tortuous affair but the Kenyans, though disgruntled at losing one of their top youngsters, were not prepared to oppose his change of allegiance and will reportedly receive a couple of new tracks as part of the bargain.

With a new name and a guaranteed income of $1,000 a month for life, the 20-year-old Shaheen has a Qatar passport and will represent his new country in Paris. He said: "I really don't have any idea what the Qatar federation's prize will be if I win gold in Paris."

Confused

I'm amazed the IAAF allowed it. What happened to the 6 years to receive citizenship for international championship competition? Or is that only for the Olympics?

___I guess, Qatar has enough money to grease the gears in the IAAF to make it work at the speed of light.

I hope there was more to it than that, but I sort of doubt it. Money does talk, and the IAAF probably isn't all that different from the IOC...
